This teaching and learning sequence has been developed for Year 8 Earth and Space Sciences and focuses on students developing their understanding of the geological time scale and being able to place periods of geological time on a geological timeline. The sequence is based on Tamara Camilleri’s research on micropalaeontology where she investigates 400 MY old organisms such as Ostracods to assist her in classifying and naming organisms and looking at relationships between these organisms and others overseas.

Students investigate the formation of different rock types and compare their differences and similarities based on their physical and chemical properties. The opportunity to engage first hand in observing and analysing these rock types is provided in an excursion to Lilydale or Woori Yallock where Tamara conducts her research. Students will be able to link their understanding back to the geological timeline of when the rocks were formed and some of the fossils that may be found in these.
