Professor David McCooey

Professor David McCooey teaches Literary Studies and Professional & Creative Writing in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University

and supervises Honours and postgraduate students. David’s work has been published in both national and international journals. In 1996, David’s critical work Artful Histories: Modern Australian Autobiography (1996, re-published 2009) won the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Award and in 1997 was short-listed for the Colin Roderick Award for Best Australian Book.

David was the Deputy General Editor of the Macquarie PEN Anthology of Australian Literature (2009), an edited collection that won the 2010 ‘Special Award’ in the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards, and the 2010 Tertiary (Wholly Australian) Scholarly Reference Award at the Australian Educational Publishing Awards.  David, with A/Prof Maria Takolander, also co-edited The Limits of Life Writing (Routledge, 2018), a collection of essays that began life as a CHRG symposium in 2016.

David’s poetry collection Outside (2011) was a finalist in the 2012 Melbourne Prize for Literature’s ‘Best Writing Award’ and was short-listed for the Queensland Literary Awards (Poetry). His latest collection is Star Struck, which was published in 2016 by UWA Publishing. David has also published numerous critical essays in books and journals.
