Associate Professor Maria Takolander teaches Literary Studies and Professional & Creative Writing in the School of Communication and Creative Arts at Deakin University. Maria supervises Honours and postgraduate students in Literary Studies and Creative Writing.
Maria is the author of a book of short stories, The Double; three collections of poetry, The End of the World, Ghostly Subjects and Narcissism; and a work of literary criticism Catching Butterflies: Bringing Magical Realism to Ground.
Maria has been the recipient of two Australia Council Grants. She was the inaugural winner of the Australian Book Review Elizabeth Jolley Short Story Prize in 2010. Maria’s collection of short stories The Double is a finalist in the 2015 Melbourne Prize for Literature – Best Writing Award. A special feature on Maria’s poetry was commissioned for Poetica (Radio National), and broadcast in May 2015.
