in Aged Care
The Centre for Innovation and Education in Aged Care (CIEAC) has been engaged in the development of a number of complementary programs. Advances to date have been achieved through previous and ongoing funding support from the JO & JR Wicking Trust, and funding support from the Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) through the Teaching and Research Aged Care Services (TRACS) – Aged Care Workforce Fund.
Teaching Nursing Home
The Teaching Nursing Home program was developed in 2007 as a model of education, leadership and workforce development in the contemporary context of residential aged care service provision in Australia. It was launched to facilitate the provision of high quality care to people living in residential aged care facilities in Australia and as a ‘state of the art’ environment for nursing student placements.
The teaching nursing home concept has been implemented internationally, through affiliation with an academic institution, usually a University, as a means of integrating education, research and clinical care in a residential aged care setting.
The Teaching Nursing Home program aims to generate a ‘whole of organisation’ approach to creating a healthy work environment in residential aged care settings that results in improved recruitment, training, retention and satisfaction for all levels of direct care staff. The leaders in evidence-based aged care practice work with staff and students at the clinical interface to monitor and identify opportunities to enhance the quality of care, review and develop evidence-based policy on aged care nursing practice, and mentor and coach students and staff to implement the highest standard of care.
Tri-focal Model of Care: Education Program for Residential Aged Care
The Tri-focal Model of Care: Education Program for Residential Aged Care focuses on the three major concepts of:
- Partnership-centred care
- A positive work environment
- Evidence-based practice.
The Tri-focal Model of Care is dynamic and inclusive, and acknowledges the importance of building and sustaining relationships among all stakeholders – residents, their families, staff, students and service providers. The perspectives of all stakeholders are taken into account with the aim of improving the wellbeing of each group.
Like other culture change models in aged care, such as the ‘Eden Alternative’ and the ‘Wellspring Model’, the Tri-focal Model of Care embraces dignity, autonomy, choice, and companionship as essential attributes to wellbeing.
The Tri-focal Model of Care advances existing models. In particular, it takes account of Australian regulatory requirements in relation to the Aged Care Accreditation Standards1 and the Aged Care Funding Instrument2. Emphasis is placed on sustaining culture change.
The Tri-focal Model of Care education program is conducted interactively. Participants are encouraged to develop practices based on the above principles. The Tri-focal Model of Care education program is being made available in two forms.
- The workplace program is currently being delivered in Victoria with our clinical service partners, primarily using a train-the-trainer approach to disseminating the Tri-focal Model of Care.
- The online program, which is an e-learning adaptation of the workplace program, is offered as a freely available, self-directed and self-assessed program. A Deakin University Tri-focal Model of Care certificate of completion is awarded for satisfactory completion of individual Modules in the online program. It is envisaged that the online program will eventually be offered with formal graduate-level certification from Deakin University.
Tri-focal Model of Care: Teaching and Research Aged Care Services
The Tri-focal Model of Care: Teaching and Research Aged Care Services project has been funded through the DoHA Teaching and Research Aged Care Services (TRACS) – Aged Care Workforce Fund. It involves the implementation of the Tri-focal Model of Care education program in five residential aged care facilities within three health care organisations (Cabrini, Monash Health and Western District Health Services) located in metropolitan and rural Victoria.
CIEAC researchers and teaching personnel are working in collaboration with consortium members to implement the Tri-focal Model of Care education program with the existing workforce in participating residential aged care facilities.
