Job Market Ready, Set, Go

The 2019 Business and Law Research Retreat for PhD students held in November, had a very clear focus: How to succeed in the PhD job market.

Professor Leonard Lee of the National University of Singapore Business School, spoke engagingly of his experiences in pursuing an academic career, including lessons learned from the mistakes made along the way.

Professor Karen Kelsky‘s presentations at the Retreat – ‘Hacking the academic presentation’ and ‘Hacking the academic job market’ – provided deep insights to assist our PhD students in planning for life beyond the PhD.  Professor Kelsky is the Founder and President of The Professor Is In, which provides advice and consulting services on the academic job search and all elements of the academic and post-academic career. She speaks nationally and internationally on topics related to Ph.D. professionalization, and is a weekly columnist at Chronicle Vitae.  Her latest book is The Professor Is In: The Essential Guide to Turning Your Ph.D. Into a Job (Random House 2015).

Presentations by Dr Elizabeth Ooi of the University of Western Australia, Professor Jenny Stewart of ‘Research Coaching Australia’, Dr Jon Hopwood of Social Agility and Deakin Alumnus Dr Robin Visser, rounded out the program, which can be seen here: PROGRAM FACULTY HDR RETREAT 2019 151019

The Retreat was convened by Faculty HDR Director, Associate Professor Edward Podolski, and organised by the Research Services Team.  A few of the PhD participants are pictured below, enjoying catching up with old and new friends.
