Are you a new international student? Here’s what you need to know

From Melbourne’s buzzing city life to Geelong’s relaxed atmosphere, from our regional towns like Warrnambool to the beautiful countryside and beaches beyond, we know you’ll love living in Victoria.

If you’ve never been to Australia before, or you’ve visited previously, here’s some essential information about living in Australia as a Deakin student.

What do I do when I arrive?

Your international flight will arrive at Melbourne Airport. We know how nice it is to see a friendly face when you’re in a new place, which is why we offer a free airport pick up service for all commencing international students. Book your airport pick-up now so you can be escorted directly to your accommodation. You must submit your application at least three business days prior to your departure.

And when you’re at the airport, visit the Student Welcome Desk and pick up your international student welcome pack.

What are my options for accommodation?

You’ve got a couple of options for accommodation in Australia: you can live on-site at any of our campuses, or you can rent accommodation nearby. We recommend organising temporary accommodation, either on-site or off-site, for when you first arrive so you can settle in, assess your options and then make a decision about your long-term arrangements.

Read more about Deakin’s campus accommodation here and explore HouseMe, Deakin’s search tool for off-campus accommodation.

How do I take care of my health and safety?

Just like when you’re on holidays, settling into a new country can turn your normal health and fitness routine upside down. Here at Deakin, we have everything you need to keep your wellbeing in check on-campus. We have new fitness centres for you to use, doctors, nurses and counsellors you can visit for free at our Medical Centres, and 24/7 on-campus security which you can stay in touch with via the SafeZone app.

Remember to arrange Overseas Student Health Cover if you need it.

Can I get a job in Australia?

You can work part time, up to 40 hours per fortnight, while you’re studying at Deakin. You may like to earn extra income or gain some work experience in a job related to your degree. We can help you find work, learn about your rights and visa, and even arrange an internship while you’re in Australia.

How do I meet new people?

You have the opportunity to meet all of the other international students commencing at Deakin this trimester at the International Student Welcome in O Week. We also recommend you join DUSA, the Deakin University Student Association, to get involved in events, activities and tours. Check out your personalised Orientation Itinerary to see all the ways you can get involved during the first few weeks of the trimester.

What’s the weather like?

Melbourne, Geelong and Warrnambool are located on the coast of Australia, which means they’re warm in summer (Dec-Feb) and cold in winter (June-Aug). Melbourne is famous for having ‘four seasons in one day’: the weather can change very quickly! It’s a good idea to wear layers and have an umbrella in your bag just in case.

It’s important to wear sunscreen everyday because the UV levels are very high in Australia. And, stay up to date with the weather forecast by following the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM).

Who do I ask for help?

Our International Student Advisers (ISAs) are here to help you anything and everything, when you arrive and for the duration of your time in Australia. Drop in or call to book an appointment with an ISA on your campus. If you’re not sure who to call, you can call the general line on 03 5227 8617.

For more information, visit our living in Australia website. We can’t wait to see you soon!

NOTE: International Student Advisers are your first point of contact at Deakin, for queries ranging from accommodation to understanding your student visa and whats expected of you.
