Australia China Relations Seminar – 2021 A Year in Review

The Australia China Relations and Higher Education Research Network invites you to join us to look back on the year that was in the tumultuous Australia China relationship. This seminar will be a conversation with two ABC journalists – Max Walden and Iris Zhao – discussing this important and troubled relationship from their journalistic and personal perspective.

Iris Zhao has been a Chinese storyteller for nine years. Iris joined the news industry in Reuters’ Beijing bureau in 2011 and then reported for the New York Times in China until deciding to take a break from work in Australia. Iris is now a digital journalist with the ABC, with experience in reporting China’s relations with the world and extensive other social issues of the country.

Max Walden is a digital journalist with the ABC’s Asia Pacific newsroom. He was previously based in Southeast Asia where he reported for outlets including Al Jazeera, the Voice of America, South China Morning Post and Foreign Policy. His writing has also appeared in Australian Foreign Affairs and the Lowy Interpreter. Max is editor of the Election Watch blog at Melbourne School of Government and a PhD candidate with Melbourne Law School’s Asian Law Centre.
