TITLE: ‘Comic Routines’
PRESENTER: Dr. Andrew Dean, Lecturer in Writing and Literature, SCCA, Waurn Ponds Campus, Deakin University.
ABSTRACT:
Laughter appears in seemingly the most unlikely of situations – at least for Jews. “We eat as if it were Yom Kippur, sleep in succahs, and dress as if it were Purim,” went one grim joke circulating in the Warsaw Ghetto. Primo Levi in If This is a Man (1947) asks “the most ferocious of the Kapos” in the camp if there really is a “Kartoffelschalenkommando,” a ‘Potato Peeling Command’ – and how to be enrolled in it.
In this talk, I will first introduce a new project I am working on, which explores the significance and potential value of the remarkable archive of comic tones in writing by Jews after WWII. (As one truly great Jewish joke has it: Jews are like everyone else, only more so.) I am interested in how comedy, one of the least celebrated of the classical literary genres, can sketch out new modes of vivacity and new forms of understanding from within literary experience. I will move on to discuss Saul Bellow’s 1970 novel Mr Sammler’s Planet, showing how the book undertakes comic voyages into public intellectualizing, ultimately refusing various instrumentalizations of the Holocaust.
