The Warrnambool Collective Research Retreat – 10 – 14 February, 2020

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS PROGRAM HAS NOW BEEN FULLY SUBSCRIBED FOR 2020.

 Monday 10 February – Friday 14 February 2020

The Warrnambool Collective (TWC) is made up of people from across the Faculty of Arts and Education, who meet together twice yearly for an extended residential research and writing intensive on the Warrnambool Campus.

The kind of work undertaken typically includes things like planning, drafting, and workshopping individual and joint writing; revising work prior to publication or responding to reviewer’s comments; discussing publication and the publication process; grant application writing; and rewriting, reviewing and polishing writing. It’s also an opportunity to introduce ourselves and our research to each other, and to engage in a range of research related activities.

TWC retreats are designed and run by academics for academics. The collective is characterised by a strong sense of collegiality and sharing. New participants are very welcome. At the end of each retreat there is an opportunity for all participants to contribute to decisions about the foci of subsequent retreats and to contribute to their organisation.

Ove time, TWC has been focused on particular themes and areas of theory, including practice, place and space, and performance and performativity. These themes have provided a basis for shared research conversation and collaborative writing projects, inclusive of a wide range of fields and methodologies.

Each retreat centres on a combination of:

  • Focused writing time: no meetings, no email, no group work, no discussion. Just writing!
  • Symposia: structured sharing and discussion of theme-based, theory-based and open-topic presentations
  • Workshops: practical sessions designed to assist with academic life and research capacity. These have included workshops on publication, grant writing, understanding citation metrics, establishing and maintaining international research collaborations, writing book proposals, responding to paper reviews, working with government, the challenges of co-writing, generating and recording research engagement and impact, and constructing effective conference presentations; and
  • Collective activities: a variety of activities devised to encourage teamwork, collaboration, and creativity. Such activities have included geocaching, photo story treasure hunts, and informal dinners.

Accommodation for TWC participants is provided on the Warrnambool Campus in shared, self-contained units. Breakfast is supplied, funded by the Faculty. Lunch is provided on retreat days.

The next retreat is scheduled to run from Monday 10 February to Friday 14 February 2020. If you would like to participate in the February retreat, please contact Sarah Pinto ([email protected]) by Friday 20 December. Numbers are restricted by the number of rooms available in the accommodation which are allocated on a first-come first-served basis, so please register early to ensure a place. Please also note that there is a three-night minimum for all participants.
