Starting at university is exciting, but it can also feel big, new, and a little overwhelming.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0why the\u00a0Library\u00a0is a place designed not just for study, but for connection,\u00a0creativity\u00a0and community. Our newest exhibition,\u00a0<\/span>Neighbourhood<\/span><\/i><\/a>:\u00a0<\/span>What does the Library mean to you,\u00a0<\/span><\/i>brings\u00a0this to life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A neighbourhood is a community of intersecting stories and lives, and this exhibition celebrates exactly that. Featuring student artworks\u00a0submitted\u00a0to the annual Library Artwork Competition,\u00a0<\/span>Neighbourhood<\/span><\/i>\u00a0showcases\u00a0the many unique perspectives on what the Deakin Library means to the people who use it every day\u00a0\u2013\u00a0new students, returning students, and everyone in between. It highlights the\u00a0Library\u00a0as more than just a study space, but the beating heart of Deakin\u2019s student experience.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This exhibition\u00a0builds on\u00a0the\u00a0Library\u2019s\u00a02024 exhibition\u00a0<\/span>Neighbourhood: Deakin Visual Art Society<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0originally presented at Deakin\u2019s Burwood\u00a0Campus.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Get creative: build\u00a0a\u00a0house\u00a0out of paper<\/h2>\n

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a hands\u2011on activity where visitors decorate and construct their own paper house\u00a0using templates designed by Deakin students. These houses are then added to a growing collaborative installation\u00a0of\u00a0a paper neighbourhood that reflects the vibrancy and individuality of the Deakin community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Take some time to get creative by constructing your own foldable\u00a0house and\u00a0become an active part of the growing\u00a0neighbourhood!\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0simple,\u00a0relaxing,\u00a0and a perfect creative break between classes. No artistic experience needed. Just take a few minutes to unwind and create something new!<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The exhibition also features a selection of student artworks\u00a0submitted\u00a0to the annual Library Artwork Competition since 2023, each created in response to the prompt\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWhat does the\u00a0Library\u00a0mean to you?\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These works reveal the wide range of perspectives and experiences that shape student life at Deakin, expressing themes of community, creativity, belonging, and connection. From playful interpretations of Library spaces to thoughtful reflections on study, identity and wellbeing, the artworks\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0how the\u00a0Library\u00a0is not just a physical place, but a meaningful touchpoint in students\u2019 academic and personal journeys. Together, they form a powerful visual expression of what a neighbourhood can be: a diverse community made richer by the individual stories within it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Neighbourhood\u00a0<\/span><\/i>is open until April at the\u00a0Waurn\u00a0Ponds Gallery Space, from 8am\u20139pm daily.\u00a0Drop in, explore the artwork,\u00a0contribute\u00a0your own\u00a0crafted neighbourhood\u00a0house\u00a0and help shape a community installation that grows throughout Trimester 1. Whether\u00a0you’re\u00a0brand\u2011new to Deakin or returning for another exciting year,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a place for you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
