In the lead up to this year\u2019s <\/span>International Open Access Week<\/span><\/a> (20\u201326 October), Deakin Library is publishing a series of articles that explore this year\u2019s OA Week theme: <\/span>‘Who Owns Our Knowledge?’<\/span><\/a>. In this post, our guest author Caitlin Savage, Research Librarian, Publishing and Open Access, shares how your research articles can be made open access.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Opening your research \u2013 how to ensure your publications are as open as possible<\/span><\/span><\/h2>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/i>Research is a global public good, and barriers to the dissemination of research should be removed wherever possible.\u201d<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What do we mean by \u2018open access\u2019?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

When research is fully open access, it is free for the public to access, read, download, copy, share, or use for any other lawful purpose.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This approach to open access was established in the <\/span>Budapest Open Access Initiative (2002)<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>Berlin Declaration (2003)<\/span><\/a>. More recently, international frameworks like the <\/span>UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science (2021)<\/span><\/a> and the <\/span>Toluca\u2013Cape Town Declaration on Research Assessment (2024)<\/span><\/a> recognise knowledge as a public good and call for research to be openly shared, inclusive, and collaborative.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These global commitments, much like Deakin\u2019s own <\/span>Open Research Position Statement<\/span><\/a> echo the theme of this year\u2019s Open Access Week: ‘<\/span>Who owns our knowledge?’.<\/span><\/i> They highlight that ownership should not rest with a handful of publishers, but with the communities who create, use, and are impacted by research.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How can I make my articles OA?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Open access can take many different forms, but when it comes to journal articles there are two main pathways:\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Publish in an open access journal, or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Make your accepted manuscript openly available in a repository like <\/span>Deakin Research Online<\/span><\/a> (DRO).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Publishing in open access journals<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Community-controlled (diamond) journals<\/span><\/b> are fully open access journals that don\u2019t charge fees to readers or authors. Diamond journals focus on serving the needs of their research community rather than generating profit from the publishing business model. They are usually funded by universities, governments, societies or associations in order to be made freely available online.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
