Due to the upgrade, Elements will be unavailable from <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">5pm<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">19 August, <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">with access estimated to return at <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">midday,<\/span><\/b> <b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">20 August<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Please note this window is dependent on testing and subject to change. It is recommended to avoid scheduling training sessions or other activities reliant on Elements during this time.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This upgrade will bring significant changes to navigation in Elements, with the current menu that expands across the top of the screen being replaced by a left-side fold-out menu. There will be some adjustments for users navigating to edit their profile, manage publications and configure their settings. It does this by harvesting published outputs from online data sources. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/experts.deakin.edu.au\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Find An Expert,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Deakin\u2019s staff profile system, is a module of Elements, so all research outputs in Elements are displayed there. They are also fed into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dro.deakin.edu.au\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Deakin Research Online <\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">(DRO), Deakin&#8217;s research repository.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Please <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/library\/help\/contact-your-librarian\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">contact your librarian<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> if you have any queries or notice any irregularities after the upgrade.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-contrast=\"none\"><a id=\"eric\"><\/a>The Education Research Index secures ERIC for the future<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ERIC\u2019s future is secure, and the index will continue to cover Australian journal titles via <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/library\/a-z\/databases\/results?record=e1002504\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">ProQuest\u2019s free Education Research Index<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.deakin.edu.au\/article\/library-research-news-july-2025-edition\/#ERIC\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">previously reported by the Library<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, ERIC is used regularly by anyone researching education from the early years right through to tertiary education. It had come under threat from funding cuts linked to the United States Department of Education and the US Department of Government Efficiency.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As a response to these cuts, ERIC initially informed libraries it would be discontinued, before later clarifying that it intended to reduce the number of titles it indexed. The index would begin to focus on research coming from the United States, which threatened the visibility of research from Australia and elsewhere.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In response to this uncertainty and global advocacy from libraries, ProQuest have undertaken to maintain the full ERIC index in a new product, including those journals that had been earmarked for removal. The index remains free for public use.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Library has reviewed this indexation and can report <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/library\/a-z\/databases\/results?record=e1002504\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">the Education Research Index<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> is a suitable replacement for ERIC.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does this mean for you?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134245418&quot;:true,&quot;134245529&quot;:true,&quot;335559738&quot;:160,&quot;335559739&quot;:80}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Importantly, this means journals (including many Australian journals) that have previously been indexed in ERIC will remain visible to popular aggregator platforms such as Google Scholar and Library Search.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If you\u2019re a researcher who has used the ERIC database in the past, we\u2019d advise you to use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/library\/a-z\/databases\/results?record=e1002504\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Education Research Index<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> in place of ERIC.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Our analysis shows that this new product matches all titles indexed by ERIC.
