This may impact eligibility for free open access for some researchers. Please read the important information below about open access options for these publishers for the rest of 2024.<\/p>\n<h2>Wiley &amp; Hindawi update<\/h2>\n<p>The open access publishing agreement with Wiley is predicted to reach its annual article allocation by the <strong>end of September<\/strong>. Changes to the open access approval process are outlined below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hybrid journals<\/strong><br \/>\nFor the remainder of the 2024 (October\u2013December), open access publishing in <a href=\"https:\/\/authorservices.wiley.com\/asset\/Wiley-Journal-APCs-OnlineOpen.xlsx\">Wiley\u2019s hybrid journals<\/a> will no longer be possible through our open access publishing agreement. Authors may choose to either:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>publish via the subscription route or<\/li>\n<li>pay the article processing charge (APC) to make their article open access. Eligible authors choosing to pay will receive a 10% discount.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Hybrid journals represent the majority of Wiley\u2019s journals.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fully open access journals<\/strong><br \/>\nOpen access publishing in <a href=\"https:\/\/authorservices.wiley.com\/asset\/Wiley-Journal-APCs-Open-Access.xlsx\">Wiley\u2019s fully open access journals<\/a> will continue to be supported throughout 2024 for articles submitted <em>before <\/em>30 September.<\/p>\n<p>Authors who submit articles to Wiley\u2019s fully open access journals <em>after <\/em>30 September will need to pay the necessary charges. A 10% discount will be available to eligible authors.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2025 and beyond<\/strong><br \/>\nThe current agreement with Wiley expires on 31 December 2024. Further details about arrangements for 2025 and beyond will be provided soon.<\/p>\n<h2>Springer Nature update<\/h2>\n<p>The open access publishing agreement with Springer is predicted to reach its annual article allocation by the second week of October. After this date, there will be no further open access approvals. The cap is finite. Articles can still be published with subscription access, but if authors wish to publish open access, they will need to pay the article processing charge (APC) themselves.<\/p>\n<h2>Other pathways to open access<\/h2>\n<p>There are multiple pathways to publishing open access, besides our read and publish agreements. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Green open access<\/strong>:\u00a0Green Open Access involves self-archiving a version of your non-OA work (i.e. the author-accepted manuscript) in an institutional repository, making it freely available to others. By depositing your author-accepted manuscript in Elements, you increase the accessibility of your research, contribute to the global knowledge base, and adhere to open access mandates from funders. This means that researchers may still be eligible for free open access through a different journal. They take the library\u2019s existing expenditure on subscriptions and repurpose it to cover both reading and publishing in that publisher\u2019s journals. When you publish in a journal that\u2019s included in one of the agreements, your article will be made open access and you won\u2019t have to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC). Some of our agreements are subject to a limitation (or \u201ccap\u201d) on the number of individual articles that can be made open access per year.
