The team toured the fish tanks and boats and learnt about the complexity of the water tank filtration system. We also heard more about their research into sea urchins, which sees the researchers turning a (native) pest species into an economically desirable product and producing highly sought-after urchin roe. This visit provided our librarians and library team members a rich opportunity to learn more about the work our researchers are undertaking and share how the library can partner with them in their research.

TESOL in Context indexed in Scopus

We are delighted to share the news that TESOL in Context has recently been accepted for indexing in Scopus, one of the largest and most prestigious abstract and citation databases of peer-reviewed literature. TESOL in Context is one of several ‘diamond’ open access journals that the library hosts and publishes as part of our commitment to and support for community-controlled publishing. Congratulations to the TESOL in Context team on this significant achievement!

International Open Access Week 2024

Planning has begun for Open Access Week, which is coming up worldwide in October. This year’s International Open Access Week (21–27 October) will continue last year’s focus on Community over Commercialisation. This is the first year a theme has ever been repeated, which shows how important it is to talk about open scholarship that serves the best interests of our community.

Some of the questions that remain unresolved include:

What are the consequences when a small number of corporations control knowledge production rather than researchers themselves?

What are the hidden costs of business models that entrench extreme levels of profit while exacerbating inequity?

When does the opaque collection and use of personal data by commercial platforms begin to undermine academic freedom?

When and in what ways can commercialisation align with the public interest?

What community-governed infrastructures already exist that better serve the interests of the research community and the public (such as preprint servers, repositories and open publishing platforms)?

How can we shift the default toward using these community-minded options?

Deakin Library will be hosting a program of events across the week, and we invite you to join the conversation. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

New Research Data Management tool coming soon!

Deakin Library is partnering with Digital Services and Deakin Research to bring you a freshly upgraded tool for your Research Data Management Plans (RDMPs) and dataset records! The move to Version 3 of the ReDBox platform brings a number of user-experience, functionality and workflow integration improvements – making it easier for you to develop your RDMP and share your research with the wider community by creating a dataset record for Deakin Research Online (DRO). The new tool is scheduled for release to the Deakin community later this year.

Hot tip: Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

Screenshot of the online Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ)

Are you wanting to publish in more Open Access journals but don’t know where look?
