As LGBTQIA+ people, particularly trans and gender-diverse people, continue to face discrimination even in 2024, it is an important time to include, uplift, share and learn from their voices and histories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Deakin Library always encourages students, academics, researchers and members of the community to be intentional about making both your academic and leisure reading materials inclusive and diverse. By advocating for students to ACT UP, they recognize the importance of discerning fact from fiction and how these research skills allow them to be more socially just in all facets of their lives.\u2019<\/p>\n<h2>How can you get started?<\/h2>\n<p>Below are some more resources and search strategies that will help you incorporate queer and trans perspectives and ACT UP in your research.<\/p>\n<h3>Search \u2018queery\u2019 tips<\/h3>\n<p><strong><em>Keywords&nbsp; <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The language used by LGBTQIA+ communities to describe themselves and their experiences is constantly evolving. There have also been significant historical changes in the language and the expression of ideas relating to LGBTQIA+ people and their experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The following resources will help you identify and understand keywords that you can use to find LGBTQIA+ research and more resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/aifs.gov.au\/cfca\/publications\/lgbtiq-communities\">Australian Institute of Family Studies (AIFS) glossary of common terms<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stonewall.org.uk\/help-advice\/glossary-terms\">Stonewall\u2019s glossary of terms<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vic.gov.au\/inclusive-language-guide\">Victorian Government\u2019s Inclusive Language Guide<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lgbtqia.ucdavis.edu\/educated\/glossary\">LGBTQIA Resource Center Glossary<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/adventuresintimeandgender.org\/wormholes\/world-genders\/\">Genders of the world<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitaltransgenderarchive.net\/learn\/terms\">Global terms \u2013 Digital Transgender Archive<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Search symbols<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Phrase searching (\u201c\u2026\u201d) \u2013 put quotation marks around a particular phrase or title to search for those words in the order they appear in quotation marks, e.g. \u201cgender identity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Truncation (*) \u2013 for alternative endings, e.g. LGBT*= LGBT, LGBTI, LGBTIQ, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Note: Trans* will get trans, transgender and transsexual but also transport, translation, transnational.<\/p>\n<p>Proximity searching allows you to search for terms that are close together, e.g. <em>genderqueer N5 inclusion<\/em> will find results with genderqueer within five words of inclusion. This works for Ebsco databases \u2013 check the &#8216;help&#8217; for the proximity commands for other databases.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Boolean operators <\/em><\/strong><em>&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Use OR to combine synonyms and related terms or search for alternative spellings. For example:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"TextRun SCXW20993445 BCX2\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"none\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW20993445 BCX2\">transgender OR \u201cgender identity\u201d OR nonbinary OR genderqueer)<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li>colonisation OR colonization, color OR colour.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use AND to combine different keywords and concepts \u2013 e.g. \u201cgender identity\u201d AND discriminat*.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Combine and refine<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The search process is iterative and there will never be one perfect combination of keywords and phrases for your topic. We encourage you to review how well your search results match your needs, continuing to tweak the search with different terms and functions to shape your results as needed.<\/p>\n<p>There are likely to be different strategies for different aspects of your topic. Keep adapting and exploring new combinations as you learn more about your topic from different sources.
