{"id":3637,"date":"2021-06-15T09:30:22","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T23:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.deakin.edu.au\/article\/?p=3637"},"modified":"2021-07-30T09:08:19","modified_gmt":"2021-07-29T23:08:19","slug":"experiences-of-local-elder-uncle-rob-lowe-brought-to-life-through-virtual-reality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.deakin.edu.au\/article\/experiences-of-local-elder-uncle-rob-lowe-brought-to-life-through-virtual-reality\/","title":{"rendered":"Experiences of local Elder Uncle Rob Lowe brought to life through virtual reality"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Deakin PhD candidate<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>Will King<\/strong>, is on a mission to tell some of the nation\u2019s most important stories through his confronting and moving&nbsp;<strong>virtual reality (VR) film<\/strong>, recently launched at the&nbsp;<strong>University\u2019s Warrnambool campus<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><i>The Crossing<\/i>&nbsp;is based on the life of&nbsp;<strong>Peek Wurrung Elder<\/strong><strong>, Uncle Rob Lowe<\/strong>. Together, Uncle Rob and Will planned, scripted and produced the film over a period of&nbsp;<strong>three years<\/strong>, as part of&nbsp;<strong>Will\u2019s PhD study on using virtual reality as a means for truth-telling and reconciliation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The film focuses on several important moments in the early life of Uncle Rob Lowe and is set on both the&nbsp;<strong>Framlingham Reserve and in the Warrnambool of the 1950s and 1960s<\/strong>. This period in Warrnambool\u2019s history was one characterised by&nbsp;<strong>racism, segregation and the oppression and dispossession of Indigenous people<\/strong>. The use of VR allows the viewer to become immersed in the recreation of Uncle Rob Lowe\u2019s experiences as they watch them.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019d done a lot of work with VR technology through my work as a teacher, so I was very aware of the power of being immersed in the experience of a 360-degree reality,\u2019 explains Will.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018It seemed like the perfect medium to ensure people came away reflecting on the themes, truths and issues explored in the film.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The creation of the film has been led by Uncle Rob Lowe from its inception and he has played a guiding role in all aspects of the production and filming. A talented local cast and crew played a vital role in making the film a reality.&nbsp;<strong>Community volunteers with backgrounds in theatre, web design, photography and make-up all gave their time<\/strong>&nbsp;willingly to contribute to the important project.<\/p>\n<p>That said, the capturing 360-degree film in rural locations wasn\u2019t without its challenges.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018I felt a really strong commitment to do justice to Uncle Rob\u2019s story, so a lot of work went into finding the right locations to film and to prepare those locations to allow the camera, cast and crew access,\u2019 says Will.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>\u2018When you make a 360-degree film, every angle is in the shot, so you can\u2019t be behind the camera. Along with its initial Warrnambool launch event, the film was also screened at a local&nbsp;<strong>National Reconciliation Event on May 27<\/strong>&nbsp;and will be entered into the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbff.com.au\/\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.bbff.com.au\/\">2021 Byron Bay International Film Festival<\/a>&nbsp;beginning October 15.<\/p>\n<p>Uncle Rob and Will are also in the process of creating an integrated website where the film and a host of relevant educational resources will reside.<\/p>\n<p>While Will isn\u2019t due to&nbsp;<strong>finalise his PhD until late 2022<\/strong>, he says his research to date has uncovered the power and importance of honest storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018The process has made me realise how important it is to confront people with our Indigenous past, particularly for&nbsp;regional communities such as Warrnambool. I feel sometimes people don\u2019t know about \u2013 and don\u2019t want to know about \u2013 the pretty nasty undercurrent of our relatively recent collective history,\u2019 says Will.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u2018The more research I do, the more I believe that truth telling is needed. After all, there is no reconciliation until the truth is told.\u2019<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Will\u2019s PhD is supervised by&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/about-deakin\/people\/julianne-lynch\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/about-deakin\/people\/julianne-lynch\">Deakin\u2019s Associate Professor of Education, Julie Lynch<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/about-deakin\/people\/glenn-auld\" data-cke-saved-href=\"https:\/\/www.deakin.edu.au\/about-deakin\/people\/glenn-auld\">Senior Lecturer in Education, Dr Glenn Auld<\/a>.
