This week, we will touch on another key skill you\u2019ll want to develop at uni: how to take good notes.<\/p>\n<p>To build long-term knowledge and understanding, it\u2019s important to actively engage with information you read, see or hear. Part of actively engaging with content is taking notes.<\/p>\n<p>There are various strategies you can adopt. Notes can be handwritten, digital, audio, visual or a combination of the above. Read on for tips about each of these methods.<\/p>\n<h2>Textual notes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>The humble pen and paper! Many students find this works best for them. The physical act of writing can keep you alert and help you focus on capturing main concepts and core ideas.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/learningcenter.unc.edu\/tips-and-tools\/annotating-texts\/\">Annotate readings<\/a> using tools such as a PDF\u2019s highlight, edit and comment functions, if available.<\/li>\n<li>Use digital note-taking tools \u2013 such as MS Word, OneNote or Evernote \u2013 to make notes on readings or lecture presentations.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FxQvsCBpNAw\">Convert audio notes<\/a> into text.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Audio notes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Use your phone or a recording device to create a verbal summary immediately after a lecture.<\/li>\n<li>When listening to a pre-recorded lecture, pause every so often to record your thoughts or any questions you have on the lecture topic.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Visual notes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Take screenshots or photos of helpful slides during a presentation.<\/li>\n<li>Create graphs, sketches or <a href=\"https:\/\/deakin.libguides.com\/creating-infographics\">infographics<\/a> of written notes (analogue or digital).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Be strategic about your note taking<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Include a meaningful title for your notes, as well as the date.<\/li>\n<li>Include any reference details \u2013 you may need to return to the original source later.<\/li>\n<li>Be prepared to review, revise and summarise your notes. Take the time to experiment with different methods, adapt and refine your note making processes as you learn.
