Deakin University Downtown Gallery <\/strong><\/p>\n Deakin Downtown, Level 12, Tower 2 Collins Square, 727 Collins Street, Melbourne, VIC 3008<\/p>\n This exhibition presents highlights from Deakin University Library\u2019s Rare Books and Special Collections. From Alfred Deakin to the Wathaurung\/Wadawurrung Peoples, from a Geneva Bible to Cleo, Deakin University Library\u2019s Special Collections contains an array of interesting, unexpected and beautiful treasures.<\/p>\n While the collections are generally aligned to the research strengths of the University, many are significant in their own right. This exhibition contains a fascinating selection of material, demonstrating the range and depth of the collections.<\/p>\n The exhibit was curated by Kristen Thornton, Special Collections, Deakin Library. About how she chose which items to feature in this exhibit, Thornton said:<\/p>\n \u2018I wanted to show the range of materials in the collection, so I\u2019ve highlighted Alfred Deakin. There\u2019s material that relates to him personally, and to how he managed one of his most significant public achievements \u2013 Federation.’<\/p><\/blockquote>\n ‘There is also a section on natural history, which is a good way to show some of our beautiful and rare colour illustrated 18th and 19th century books. Finally, there is a section on Western Victoria, which has a real range of materials within it, including the lovely sterling silver trophy recently donated by Roger Brookes, from the Barrabool Hills Ploughing Match of 1886-87. It\u2019s a local piece, made right here in Geelong.\u2019<\/p>\n
