Upcoming training series: Learn about conducting advanced reviews
Join us for our upcoming training series on conducting reviews using systematic methods. This series is designed for researchers, higher degree by research and honours students, wherever you are on your journey from developing your research question to synthesising the evidence. You can choose to attend the series as a whole, or you can focus on the session that matches the stage you are at in your review.

Conducting Advanced Reviews Part 1: Review types
Tuesday 21 February 10-11am
In Part 1, you will learn how to:
- distinguish between the purposes of advanced literature review types
- identify guidelines for different advanced literature review types
- identify the resources necessary to complete the review
Conducting Advanced Reviews Part 2: Establishing the question and starting the search
Tuesday 21 February 2-3pm
In Part 2, you will learn how to:
- determine the purpose and scope of your review
- apply search frameworks for developing a research question
- find existing reviews on your topic or similar
- choose appropriate resources to search for your review
- search academic databases using basic keyword search techniques
Conducting Advanced Reviews Part 3: The importance of review protocols
Wednesday 22 February 10-11am
In Part 3, you will learn:
- what a review protocol is
- how to identify inclusion and exclusion criteria for your review
- how to write and register a protocol to PRISMA-P and PROSPERO standards
Conducting Advanced Reviews Part 4: Developing expert searching skills
Wednesday 22 February 2-3pm
In Part 4, you will learn how to:
- search using database fields
- perform line by line searching
- use search history to combine searches
- choose and apply subject headings
- use text mining tools
Conducting Advanced Reviews Part 5: Testing and translating your search
Thursday 23 February 10-11am
In Part 5, you will learn how to:
- use the PRESS checklist to proofread your search
- use gold set articles to test your search
- translate your search between databases and platforms.
Conducting Advanced Reviews Part 6: Screening, synthesis and dissemination
Thursday 23 February 2-3pm
In Part 6, you will learn how to:
- understand options for managing search results
- use PRISMA resources to screen search results
- select a suitable critical appraisal tool
- choose an appropriate method of data synthesis
- identify reporting guidelines and publisher requirements.
