We are excited to announce the program for this year’s Researcher Training Intensive, taking place virtually to allow researchers from any location to attend simultaneously.

Part 1: Developing and evidencing skills during your HDR candidature
Monday 26 July, 9.30–11am
Strategise your research and career progress by learning how to plan, access and evidence your skills! Purposefully selecting opportunities to develop skills throughout your candidature will assist you to gain experience, build evidence of your capabilities and fill identified skills gaps.
This workshop will explore different types of skills, how to plan skills development and opportunities that are available to you both within Deakin and externally.

Part 2: Understanding journal metrics in Scopus to best define your publication strategy
Monday 26 July, 1–2.15pm
Have you ever wondered how journal metrics work in Scopus, and what they can (and can’t) measure? Join us for this session with Senior Customer Consultant for Scopus and SciVal, Dr Steven Riddell, and add an understanding of journal metrics to your publication strategy toolkit.

Part 3: Text and data mining – an exploration of ProQuest TDM Studio
Tuesday 27 July, 9.30–10.30am
Are you interested in text and data mining? Come along to this session designed to give an in-depth overview of the features and capabilities for undertaking text and data mining using ProQuest TDM Studio. Expect to learn which databases are included in TDM Studio, how to create and refine your dataset, and how to use Jupyter notebooks to explore it.

Part 4: Visualisation tools for your literature review
Tuesday 27 July, 1–2.30pm
Refining your keyword search strategy is essential for your literature review – but have you considered expanding your search through references and citing relationships? There are many tools available to help you map and visualise research literature and some only need a relevant seed or key paper as a starting point.
This session will give you the chance to see some next-generation literature mapping and discovery tools in action, and to find out how they may be useful for your literature review.
Part 5 Project Showcase: Data capture and analysis – eResearch tools and support
Wednesday 28 July, 2–3.30pm
Are you planning a project that will involve data collection and analysis? You will benefit from this project showcase session presented by our experts at Deakin eResearch: Dr Jerry Lai and Dr Andrew Goh.
The session will give you an overview of a range of tools that will help you with data collection (REDcap, Qualtrics and web scraping options), data analysis tools (R, Python, SPPS and Tableau) and a case study of how to effectively use these tools for your research project.

Part 6: Human Research Ethics and creating a plan to manage your research
Thursday 29 July, 9.30–11am
Does my project involve human participants or their data or tissue? Do I need to get ethics approval to conduct my project? And if so, what will that involve? What’s a research data management plan and why would I want one anyway?
In this session, we’ll be answering these questions and many more. If you’re embarking on a new human research project here at Deakin, this is a great place to start!

Part 7: Data storage options for Deakin staff and researchers
Thursday 29 July, 1–2.15pm
Where do you save your digital data? Desktop? Documents folder? U drive? OneDrive? Syncplicity folder? CloudStor? RDS network drives?
Do you work on multiple devices, or do you need to share documents or work collaboratively with colleagues? With so many options available, this session is essential for anyone wanting to learn about the different storage options, their pros and cons and what is available for Deakin users.
