New GenAI resources for students and researchers
Last year, higher education and libraries saw the boom of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) through the popularity of ChatGPT and other AI tools. This new technological wave has the potential to redefine how content is created with the increase adoption of these tools.
In response to this Deakin Library has created:
- the Using Generative AI guide, which provides information about using generative AI tools in an ethical, creative and evaluative way
- the Responsible use of GenAI in research guide for researchers
- the GenAI modules for further learning.
The AI revolution
Throughout last year, Deakin Library realised that generative AI was not a passing fad, like Google Glass or Theranos. Instead, we saw the evolution of existing GenAI tools and the development of new ones. The generative AI tool OpenAI developed could interact and build upon others, as showcased by OpenAI cofounder Greg Brockman in his demonstration at TED:
As well as AI components added to technology we use in our everyday lives, Google launched Gemini to mixed criticism and Microsoft launched Copilot, which may be the next evolution of our favourite helpful paperclip, Clippy.
GenAI modules for students
A priority for Deakin Library is to help students build their digital capabilities in a world that is becoming increasingly digital. As a result, we have designed these GenAI modules to develop digital fluency by guiding in effective, ethical and responsible use of the technology.
If you’re interested in developing awareness and skills in using GenAI, please check out the new suite of modules.
GenAI guide for researchers
The Responsible use of GenAI in research is a brand new resource which guides researchers and HDR students in ethical and responsible use of GenAI within their research projects. The guide follows a research lifecycle structure, providing context to the Deakin Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidelines. There are hypothetical scenarios to bring the guide to life, and responsible use and cautions provided for each stage.
