New Deakin Open Book Publication Alert: Sustainable Marine Futures
The Open Education Team is thrilled to announce the upcoming publication of our newest OER, ‘Sustainable Marine Futures‘.
Led by Dr. Patricia Corbett from the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Built Environment, this fully open and interactive book explores how ocean science, sustainability, policy and community intersect to address key marine challenges, from climate change to food security. By integrating global, national and local Australian perspectives, Dr. Corbett and her expert contributors have crafted an engaging, informative and accessible resource to build ocean literacy locally and internationally.
In the spirit of elevating and capturing the voices of future industry professionals, this OER has been informed, refined and updated to reflect evolving industry policy and practice as well as the needs and ideas of students undertaking the SLE243 Sustainable Marine Management unit at Deakin. As an authentic collaborative venture, this OER proudly incorporates and acknowledges specific contributions from current Deakin graduates Ms. Nikita Dubberley, Ms. Lughaidh Kennedy, Miss Gabriella Milonas, Miss Georgia Williams, and Mr. Timothy Vincent.
It was so fantastic to work with current and past Deakin students to co-develop interactive content for this textbook. The team worked with the broader student community to create interactive H5P content that students want to engage with. ‘Sustainable Marine Futures’ has been actively integrated into SLE243 since 2024, and after careful refinement and rounds of student feedback, the team is proud to publicly release this OER under a creative commons license for use by everyone. Further chapters are scheduled for release, pending final reviews and checks in the first half of 2026, so keep an eye out for further information and upcoming press releases.
