Library Basics Week 5: How to use Library Search effectively
Whether you’re a new or returning student at Deakin, trying to figure out how to look for resources for your assignments on the Library website can be overwhelming. Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered!
Start with the basic Library Search
Search the Library collection of books, e-books, databases and other resources by using our Library Search bar. Type a known title or even just a couple of search terms to start seeing results.
Initially, you may get hundreds of results. Don’t panic. There are ways to make your search more manageable.
Filters narrow down results in different ways:
- For high-quality, peer-reviewed journal articles, select the separate filter for Scholarly (Peer Reviewed) Journals.
- Looking for books, journal articles or videos on your topic? Click on Source type and select the one you’re looking for.
- If you need to refine by a particular date range, select the All time filter and choose or customise, the date range you need.
Don’t be afraid of Library Advanced Search
If you’re feeling adventurous or can’t find what you need, try out the Advanced Search. It can be helpful to use a search planner to brainstorm search terms. When you’re ready to run your search, use one search box per concept, combining related terms with OR, and different concepts with AND.
As with Library Search, you can select the filters for peer-reviewed articles, publication date range and so on.
Check out the Searching tips page for other effective and efficient ways to run your search. For further information and support, contact our helpful Library staff.
