I’m studying online – can I still use the library?

The answer is yes! The library has lots of services to support online students, whether you live near one of our campus locations or are studying from further afield. Here are some responses to the questions we most often hear from online students.

I’m an online student, can I still borrow books from the library?

Yes you can! Firstly, you’ll find many of the items in our collection are ebooks or digital resources, making it easy for you to access them from home. Because we get access to ebooks through a range of providers, some of them have different rules about downloading, accessing and printing copies. However, with most of our digital collection you should be able to:

Secondly, online students can also request to loan physical books. You can choose the ‘Click and Collect’ option to pick them up at your local campus, or we can mail them out to you! Currently we are only able to mail items out to students located in Australia, so if you’re based internationally we recommend speaking to your Liaison Librarian for assistance finding what you need.

Can I visit the library?

Online students are very welcome to visit any of our campus libraries and make the most of our services. Whether you want to search for items to loan or just need a place to study, we’re happy to have you join us. You can even book a space if you are planning to visit.

Do I need a library card?

Your Deakin student ID is your library card. Online students can request a Deakin Card from Student Central. However, you don’t necessarily need a physical card, as you can log in with your student details on our website and request items through the website.

Is there someone who can help me with using the library and accessing resources?

Every school and faculty has Liaison Librarians who can assist you. We can show you how to master the art of using Library Search, Databases and Library Resource Guides to find what you’re looking for. For general questions about the library, you can also use our Library Chat or contact us

I’m studying from overseas, can you help me find a resource I am looking for?

Once again, your Liaison Librarian can help! We can help you track down what you need. You may be able to borrow from a library near you, depending on their borrowing terms. We can even supply you with a letter of introduction for any library you are wanting to join, if they request one from you. It is up to the international library to decide if they can grant you access.
