Highlights from Open Access Week 2023

This year’s hybrid Open Access Week program of virtual and in-person events drew nearly 200 registrations. Through dynamic speeches and vigorous panel discussions, Deakin staff with expertise in Open Publishing, Open Education and libraries  deliberated on the theme ‘Community Over Commercialisation’ and its importance to our University.

Open Access Week Keynote

University Librarian Hero Macdonald kicked off Open Access Week with a provoking and alarming keynote, discussing how the existing scholarly publishing landscape does not operate in the best interests of the public and academic community.

Open Publishing at Deakin: An online panel discussion

A panel of Deakin’s Diamond Open Access Journal Editors discussed Open Publishing through Diamond Journals, sharing tips for researchers along the way. 

Open is more than open access research: An Open Education panel discussion

In this session, panellists discussed the potential for what Open can be and mean at Deakin. The panel highlighted a philosophy of openness through the voices of open education practitioners who engage with the processes and practices involved in the creation of open educational materials.
