Five tips to get you started in the library

Deakin University Library is key to the success of every student. Not only is your campus library one of the most popular places to study on campus, but we offer online and in-person support, advice and personalised assistance to help you on your student journey.

During Orientation Week, the library will be running several online sessions to help you understand all the amazing services and resources we offer to make your university experience better. If you haven’t already, make sure you register for one now.

Whether you’re embarking on your first trimester or have been part of the Deakin community for some time, here are five tips to help you use the library to its fullest potential!

1. Talk to library staff through live Library Chat

By simply clicking the chat icon on the library’s website, you can instantly connect with library staff through Deakin’s Library Chat. Whether you need assistance locating recommended readings, advice on finding resources or have any other library-related queries, you can easily get the help you need directly from your desktop or mobile device.

2. Get tech support at the library

If you need help with your tech setup or logging into Deakin systems, visit our library’s Student TechAssist service. This peer-to-peer support service is available from Prepare Week through Week 4, specifically designed to help new students navigate the University’s digital tools and platforms.

Additionally, while you’re with us, don’t hesitate to talk to our library staff at the desk about any library-related questions you might have.

3. Find the right resources for your subjects

A perfect starting point for your research is the Library Resource Guide for your subject area. These guides, curated by Scholarly Services Librarians, provide valuable tips, links and recommended resources. Additionally, the Study and Research Guides are excellent for enhancing your digital literacy, understanding copyright responsibilities, learning about peer reviewing, and much more. Finally, our Reading List Tool helps you find the exact readings for your courses!

4. Make the most out of library search

At the top of the library’s homepage, you’ll find the Library Search tool, a powerful and user-friendly feature designed to streamline your search for necessary resources. Familiarise yourself with a few tips to maximise its efficiency for your research needs by checking out the Search tips and planning page or watching our video playlist on searching your library.

5. Enhance your study skills

The library’s Skills for study page is filled with valuable resources, including video tutorials, search planners and guides on a wide array of topics. It’s an excellent resource for new students looking to improve their study skills.

The best start to university is with the library

Deakin Library is bursting at the seams with resources and services to help you. You’re always welcome to come ask a question, sit and study, or hang out with a friend in our spaces. See you soon!
