Faces of your library: Waurn Ponds
Often behind the scenes dispatching and shelving books, or at their computers responding to students on Library Chat, our Library Advisory Services staff are some of the most helpful people on the planet! In the ‘Faces of your library’ series, you’ll get a chance to meet the staff at each campus library who you might find at the service desk, wandering among the shelves or responding to your questions online.
Meet several of our Waurn Ponds Advisory Services team: Angela Gleeson, Brooke Hudd, Heather Wojcik, Lorraine Driscoll, Riley Flaherty and Sarah Brunton!
Favourite library service
Angela:
After working from home for much of 2020, it has been lovely to return to the Service Desk this year to chat face-to-face with students and staff.
Brooke:
The Reading Nook. Everyone needs a bit of a break sometimes.
Heather:
The library has so many, but I’d have to say our Live Chat service because you can get in touch with our expert and fabulous staff instantly.
Lorraine:
Our Service Desk – it’s nice to be able to help students face to face.
Riley:
Interlibrary loans, as it can help you source any articles and books that Deakin doesn’t hold, and it is also the area I work the most in.
Sarah:
The Document Supply and Interlibrary Loan Service. Deakin staff and students can request items not currently in our collection, and we’ll do our best to obtain them.
Top three tips for using the library
Angela:
- The Skills for study webpage is packed full of useful information and resources to help you get the most out of the library.
- If you need help accessing an article or have a question about the library, you can connect online with us using the Library Chat button.
- Download the Deakin Borrow app to borrow items using your phone. You can also check the due date for items you have on loan or check the status on your requests.
Brooke:
- Ask questions. In whatever way is best for you – phone, chat, in person. Studying can be tough, but there’s so much support available.
- What you see is only a tiny portion of what we have. Explore! (Or, you know, ask…)
- If you’re new to all this, the Skills for study section of the library website is the perfect place to start.
Heather:
- Register for the Orientation sessions or, if you miss them, watch a recording later in UniStart. You can also keep an eye on our What’s On page to find upcoming training sessions, workshops and events. I highly recommend them.
- Develop your study skills by exploring the Skills for study page, where you’ll find useful resources, video tutorials, search planners and guides on a huge range of topics and much more.
- Right underneath the Library Search bar, a great place to get started with research is by clicking on the Resource Guides tile. These guides offer tips, links and helpful resources, all compiled by Liaison Librarians that specialise in your area of study.
Lorraine:
- Use our Library Chat service: from 8am–11pm, a staff member is available to answer your questions.
- Have a look at our Skills for study page – there is heaps of great information to help with your studies.
- Check out the Resource Guide for your subject area. These have been put together by our Liaison Librarian team to help with your searching. In particular, look at the tabs for ‘Finding Articles’ – there are databases and journals listed for your specific area of study.
Riley:
- Make use of the bookmarklet tool to bypass paywalls.
- Use the Resource Guides to find helpful information relating to your course.
- Contact us through live chat to seek assistance from any of the friendly library staff who can help solve your query.
Sarah:
- Add the Deakin Library bookmarklet tool to your web browser to access full-text articles held in our collection that you find while searching online.
- Follow Deakin Library on social media (@deakinlibrary) to keep up to date with library services, find out about events and get useful tips for making the most of your studies.
- Contact us via Library Chat to speak with our staff and ask any questions you have about the library, our resources, services and facilities.
Favourite recent movie or TV series
Angela:
The Tailings on SBS.
Brooke:
I’m really enjoying Season 2 of Old People’s Home for 4 Year Olds.
Heather:
One of my favourite pastimes is going to the movies. Recently though, I did enjoy watching the Netflix series Ozark, The Queen’s Gambit, Firefly Lane and the very addictive Bridgerton (to name a few!!)
Lorraine:
The Blind Side
Riley:
The Leftovers
Sarah:
Superstore
A favourite quote
Angela:
‘Replace can’t with maybe.’ – Alexi Pappas. It’s a good mantra to approach life with!
Brooke:
‘And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.’ – Roald Dahl
Heather:
I don’t have a truly favourite quote, but I do like this one: ‘Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.’ – Oscar Wilde
Lorraine:
‘A true friend is someone that accepts you just the way you are.’ – Anonymous
Riley:
‘I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.’ – Frank Herbert
Sarah:
‘I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.’ – Jean Cocteau
