End of an Era – The Last Gippsland Lakes Fishermen

In April 2021, the library was asked to help promote a new photography exhibition that was being displayed in the Alfred Deakin Prime Ministerial Library. These photos captured ‘the end of an era’ in Victorian fishery. Several of the incredible photos were adapted for the screen, along with information about the exhibition, to promote the event and highlight the work done by these photographers.

About the exhibition

Australian commercial fishing is historically small scale. In 2020, the second last bay and estuarine fishery in Victoria was closed. Photographs and oral histories captured by renowned artists prior to the fishery’s closure, as well as artifacts gathered over generations, offer a rarely seen insight into the lives of fishing families, their stories and their connection to the land and sea.

This community-driven project has benefited from the generous support of the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, Deakin University, the National Library of Australia, the University of Melbourne and the City of Melbourne.

Photographs by Leigh Henningham, Donna Squire and Geoff Stanton.

Oral Histories by Nikki Henningham.
