New Deakin open book publication alert: Digital approaches to building measurement: Standards, tools and techniques
The Open Education Team is thrilled to announce the upcoming publication of our newest OER, ‘Digital approaches to building measurement: Standards, tools and techniques’.
The construction industry is going digital – are you ready? Technology is transforming how we measure, plan, and build, and digital measurement is leading the way. To help students and professionals embrace this change, Deakin academics Dr. Argaw Gurmu, Dr. Nilupa Udawatta, Dr. Gayani Karunasena, and Mr. Reza Taban have developed an open-access book that serves as a guide to mastering essential digital measurement processes. This comprehensive resource covers the measurement of key building trades, including groundwork, concrete, formwork, reinforcement, and masonry, ensuring learners gain practical skills that align with industry standards.
While existing textbooks predominantly focus on manual measurement methods and provide limited coverage of computer-based techniques that are now widely adopted in professional practice, this handbook addresses this gap by integrating digital measurement tools, particularly RIB CostX software, which reflects contemporary industry workflows. The approach adopted in this book aligns with the principles of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Method of Measurement (ANZSMM) and industry practices.
‘Digital approaches to building measurement: Standards, tools and techniques’ will be used from 2026 onwards, providing a completely free reference manual for students studying SRE272 (Building Measurement), SRE302 (Building Measurement and Estimating), and SRQ774 (Construction Measurement and Estimating). This is set to impact approximately 400 students annually.
