Changes to your library during the COVID-19 response

July 13, 2020

Last updated: 7 August 2020

Following the Government’s advice on Monday 3 August 2020, the University has decided to close the Melbourne Burwood Campus Library. Due to Stage 4 restrictions in Melbourne, some collection items may be unavailable. Please contact Library Chat service and our friendly staff will help you find alternative resources in electronic format, if needed. Collection items available in other campuses can still be requested on the library website and will be delivered to you by post.

Library spaces in Geelong and Warrnambool are open to current Deakin students and staff only. All library visitors should bring their Deakin Card when they come to the library, as Security may ask to see it. Please remember that masks/face coverings are now mandatory in all public spaces across Victoria, which includes Deakin Campuses.

Waterfront and Waurn Ponds Libraries are open:

  • Monday to Friday: 8am–8pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: 9am–5pm

Warrnambool Library is open:

  • Monday to Friday: 9am–5pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: 1–5pm

The service desks will remain closed for staff safety, but you can contact us 24 hours a day on Library Chat or by phone or email during open hours.

Please remember that some students may not have a safe or connected place to study, so the library is essential for them. If you can continue to study at home, please stay at home. For those who do come to campus, you must follow the posted signage and safety guidelines. Do not come to campus if you are unwell.

Reserve study spaces

To ensure physical distancing requirements are met, seating at our campuses has been significantly limited. We strongly recommend you take advantage of our expanded ‘Book a Space’ availability, which now allows you to reserve study desks in addition to booths and study rooms. Please note that capacity for study rooms is reduced and will be strictly enforced for your safety.

Collection access

Access to our collection shelves has been restored at Waterfront, Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool. You may now borrow from the collection using the self-checkout machines. All books and other borrowed items will be held in quarantine for two days once they are returned.

Placing requests online

The ‘Request It’ button is also available on our website. Requested items will be posted to you unless you specify otherwise. Please ensure your address and other personal details are up to date in our system.

Returning borrowed items

Items out on loan will be automatically renewed as normal, provided no one has requested them. Loan periods have been extended on a range of items. If your item is due, please return it using your postal bag or the campus return chutes. If neither of these options works for you, please contact the library to discuss alternatives.

Government guidelines

Visitors to our campus libraries must adhere to the government’s social distancing advice. This includes practices such as:

  • covering sneezes/coughs with your elbow or sleeve, not your hands
  • regularly washing and/or sanitising your hands
  • meeting only in small groups with at least four square metres per person allowed
  • staying 1.5 metres apart from others
  • avoiding physical contact with others, including handshakes.

Campus Security will be monitoring the library spaces to ensure physical distancing and will be enforcing capacity restrictions.

Further help

Have a question? Don’t hesitate to get in touch. Some library staff will be working behind the scenes on campus, but the rest of us are working from home. We continue to offer a full service to Deakin students and staff, helping you succeed in your studies at Deakin.

This situation is constantly changing, so please be sure to refer to the University’s COVID-19 FAQs page for the most up-to-date information from Deakin leadership.
