Changes to your library during the COVID-19 response

September 29, 2020

Last updated: 6 November 2020

Libraries are open to current Deakin students and staff only. You should bring your Deakin card with you as Security may ask to see it. We strongly encourage you to book a space ahead of your visit to ensure your place, as capacity guidelines will be strictly followed. Please note: students travelling to campus should follow the University’s safety guidelines outlined on the Deakin Life blog

For the latest library hours, visit the library homepage or individual campus pages:

When you arrive, you will need to scan a QR code to sign in and assist with the University’s mandatory contact tracing efforts. Please remember that masks/face coverings are mandatory in all public spaces across Victoria, which includes Deakin Campuses.

The service desks will remain closed for staff safety, but you can contact us with library-related enquiries on:

Security is also on-site at each campus and can be contacted at 1800 062 579.

The library is essential for students who require reliable internet access for their online exams and final assessments. If you can continue to study from home, please do so.

For those who do come to campus, you must follow the posted signage and safety guidelines. Do not come to campus if you are unwell.

Reserve study spaces

To ensure physical distancing requirements are met, seating at our campuses has been significantly limited. We strongly recommend you take advantage of our expanded ‘Book a Space’ availability, which now allows you to reserve study desks in addition to booths and study rooms. Please note that capacity for study rooms is reduced and will be strictly enforced for your safety.

Collection access

Access to our collection shelves has been restored. You may now borrow from the collection using the self-checkout machines or our Deakin Borrow app. All books and other borrowed items will be held in quarantine for two days once they are returned.

Placing requests online

The ‘Request It’ button is also available on our website. Requested items will be posted to you unless you specify otherwise. Please ensure your address and other personal details are up to date in our system.

Returning borrowed items

Items out on loan will be automatically renewed as normal, provided no one has requested them. Loan periods have been extended on a range of items. If your item is due, please return it using your postal bag or the campus return chutes. If neither of these options works for you, please contact the library to discuss alternatives.

Government guidelines

Visitors to our campus libraries must adhere to the government’s social distancing advice. This includes practices such as:

  • covering sneezes/coughs with your elbow or sleeve, not your hands
  • regularly washing and/or sanitising your hands
  • meeting only in small groups with at least four square metres per person allowed
  • staying 1.5 metres apart from others
  • avoiding physical contact with others, including handshakes.

Campus Security will be monitoring the library spaces to ensure physical distancing and will be enforcing capacity restrictions.

Further help

Have a question? Don’t hesitate to get in touch. Some library staff will be working behind the scenes on campus, but the rest of us are working from home. We continue to offer a full service to Deakin students and staff, helping you succeed in your studies at Deakin.

This situation is constantly changing, so please be sure to refer to the University’s COVID-19 FAQs page for the most up-to-date information from Deakin leadership.
