5 ways the library will help you succeed at Deakin

There’s a lot to learn when you first start at university: which rooms your classes are in, who your lecturers are, which café serves the best coffee. If you want to hit the ground running and be a successful student, one thing you don’t want to put off is getting to know your library.

Deakin Library has buildings on all four campuses, including 24-hour learning spaces at Burwood, Waurn Ponds and Waterfront that ensure you have a safe, quiet place to study at all hours of the day. Whether it’s providing access to your essential unit reading, videos to enhance your digital literacy or one-on-one guidance from a research expert, the library provides multiple ways to help you succeed at Deakin.

Here are five of the most important:

1. We provide access to thousands of physical and electronic resources

The library makes sure Deakin students and staff have access to the best databases and collections so that you can find the resources you need to study successfully. You can search the whole library collection by visiting the Library tab in DeakinSync or going to the library homepage at www.deakin.edu.au/library.

2. We are available for questions any time of day or night

Got a question for the library? No need to pick up the phone or write an email – you can just chat to us by clicking on the green icon from the library homepage.

Our experts are online 24 hours a day on weekdays and from 11am–5pm on weekends to help with any library-related enquiries.

3. We offer quiet, comfortable places to study and collaborate

All four library campuses have both quiet and collaborative study spaces, including study booths and group study rooms that you can book ahead of time on DeakinSync. You’ll find a variety of places to plug in your device, access free WiFi and dig into your coursework. You can even book a computer at Burwood campus if you don’t have your own to bring in!

4. We have flexible borrowing arrangements and automatic renewals

Your Deakin ID lets you borrow not only from the Deakin Library collection, but also from dozens of university libraries throughout Australia and New Zealand. Live close to another university? You may be able to use their facilities and borrow from their collection in person as well. Check out our Borrow from other libraries page to learn more.

We know it can be tough to keep track of the items you’ve borrowed and make sure nothing is overdue. That’s why most of our 21-day and 7-day loans automatically renew four days before the due date, as long as no one else has requested it. In general, if a resource isn’t required back in the library, it will automatically renew for approximately one year. Keep this in mind if a resource you need is checked out, and make sure you request it so the item gets returned.

5. We give you personalised guidance and advice

Did you know there are librarians at Deakin who specialise in your school or faculty area? Liaison Librarians will be one of your most important resources when you’re studying at Deakin. They can help you improve your research skills, learn how to access and reference the best resources for your assignments and much more. Contact your Liaison Librarian today to learn more.

No matter what your area of study or where you’re attending classes, the library will provide essential spaces, resources and guidance to help you succeed at Deakin. Bookmark the library homepage www.deakin.edu.au/library and follow us on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram at @deakinlibrary to stay in touch with the latest news from our library staff.
