Sustainable Fishing Families National Survey

In 2017 a national survey of the health, safety and wellbeing of commercial fishers was undertaken by a Deakin University led team. The project was funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC).

Background:

Between March and June of 2017, a 56 question survey was deployed to over 4,000 registered commercial fishing operators around the country. Click here – Survey Final – to see a pdf of the survey questions.

Surveys were sent to generous and supportive peak bodies, who then addressed the envelopes and sent them out (to protect the privacy of respondents). Completed anonymous surveys were then returned to us at Deakin University (not the peak bodies).

Reminder letters were sent out a couple of weeks after the original surveys, and articles about the survey were posted in many newsletters, e-lists and co-op mailing lists.

Preliminary results were released in late 2017: Click here to read the Press Release: 28th September, 2017

The final report is currently (October 2018) undergoing review by the FRDC and will be available in the near future.
