The first lecture in the 2019 Deakin Clever and Creative Lecture Series Lecture was given by Alfred Deakin Professor Matthew Barnett, Director, Institute for Frontier Materials and Mr Brett Wickham, Managing Director, ACCIONA Energy Australia who explored the circular economy concept as a key driver of product, service and business innovation, economic growth and sustainable development.

A circular economy delivers products and services that are more profitable, improve access to global markets and provide deep environmental benefits. It is an economy where products no longer have a life cycle with a beginning, middle and end but instead add value to the ecosystem by returning to a useful cycle.

Professor Jane den Hollander, Deakin University Vice Chancellor,  Professor Tuba Kocaturk, Director Deakin DesignMind: International Design & Innovation Platform and Cr Ron Nelson, City of Greater Geelong Councillor hosted the event and guided discussion around how transitioning the circular economy into the mainstream will be one of the biggest creative challenges of our time.
