In its fourth year at Federation Square, PaperSpace 2018 was again a great success. With more than 300 guests attending the opening -launch and a never ending trail of visitors enjoying the exhibition throughout it’s duration.

This year’s exhibition curated more than 60 exceptional pieces of work from undergraduate and masters students, including drawings, models and folios. Works gathered at PaperSpace2018 referred to events of the past, actions of the present, and projective of an unavoidable future.

Innovative architecture to combat loneliness, promoting tourism, blend in with changing landscapes, and more were showcased. Masters of Architecture student Melisa Santos was behind the project ‘The Five Faces of Loneliness’ a project exploring how architecture can help combat loneliness.

“Using an existing aged care facility in Melbourne’s north east, this project aims to incorporate intergenerational programs for children and older adults to promote social interaction between the most lonely. This co-housing village would provide short-term care for children in out of home care, and a permanent home for new retirees,” Melisa said.

Fellow student, Charith Siriwardana, submitted a redevelopment of Lake Colac, in Victoria’s west, which includes a pool within the lake, a cable wakeboarding park, and redesign of the yacht club. “It’s a really beautiful natural landscape, but there’s not a lot of architecture or design around the lake to help connect it with locals and visitors. I wanted to explore how architecture could reactivate a regional community because there is a huge opportunity since thousands of people pass Colac on the way to the Great Ocean Road” Charith said. Charith has already shared his plans with the local mayor!

The School of Architecture and Built Environment is proud of its student’s architectural dedication to social and environmental principles. The good ideas and projects at PaperSpace 2018 will last longer than all of us, they are more than paper and bigger than space.

The complete collection of students works are now on display in the A+B Gallery at the Deakin Waterfront Campus in Geelong, visitors and school groups are welcome.
