In November the School of Architecture and Built Environment welcomed 71 year 10 students from St Patricks College, Ballarat to participate in a construction activity in the a+b studio at the Deakin Waterfront Campus.

Students took part in a construction activity designed to challenge their understanding of basic physics. The students formed groups to prepare a miniature model that could elevate an orange for at least 30 seconds using straws and Blu-tack. The aim was to create a stable and aesthetically appealing model.

The students were enthusiastic and engaged with the activity and used trial and error to recreate some interesting and creative models.

Following the construction, groups were encouraged to present their models and the rationale behind the method used.  Some of the students considered a minimalistic approach, being environmentally friendly while others struggled to keep their structures upright.  The best two most creative and stable models were given a small token of appreciation for their efforts.

the last ORANGE on this earth

You only have paper to draw your ideas and straws and blue tac test them out in miniature form as a model….but if you get it right, you’ll be famous
