In November Dr Chin Koi Khoo and Scott Eldridge visited Singapore and Malaysia to present a design workshop that introduced international students to Deakin University, as well as engage them in an exploratory Hybrid Design Workshop.

‘Hybrid Design’ acknowledges the diversity of contemporary design and technology, and considers the potential to generate new outcomes based on the integration of the physical and digital environment. The design workshop was developed by Scott and Khoo following a proposal by Dr Mirjana Lozanovska (Associate Head of School International) who envisaged it as a way to foster future relationships as well as engage staff and students from the institutions with academics from the Deakin School of Architecture and Built Environment.  Scott and Khoo presented promotional material to agents and representatives located in Singapore and Malaysia.  The visits and workshops were very well received with invitations to return, as well as Deakin International aiming to introduce the workshop method to other SEBE Schools and Faculties at Deakin.

The format of the presentations was a lecture consisting of an introduction to Deakin, discussion about how emerging methods and technologies effect the architecture design process, and an engaging hybrid design lecture including videos, images and information. The design workshops encouraged students to create a simple parametric design using ‘LOWPOLY’ software created by the A+B IDeEA Lab.  Students produced a design through a game platform and assessed their colleagues performance online.  This design was then exported to a smart phone application where students explored the possibilities of Augmented Reality as a potential future design tool.
